A small unimproved hay meadow on clay soil, which has probably never been ploughed. It is important primarily for its wild flowers, containing about 80 species. The highlight is a fine display of several hundred spikes of green-winged orchids in early May, when patches of adderstongue fern can also be seen. These are followed by large amounts of yellow rattle, several patches of musk mallow, and lots of knapweed, attracting many butterflies and other insects.
Visiting
On the B1007 from Horndon-on-the-Hill to Basildon, about 2km from Horndon village. The entrance is at Tyelands Farm, from where a track leads to a gate on the right opening into the meadow. Park considerately by the track and take care when pulling out on to the main road afterwards.
Accessible at all times
April to July for wild flowers (early May for orchids in particular).
